AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
237 PM PDT Fri Apr 11 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Breezy northerly winds along the coast today and
Saturday. Frost possible in the coldest interior valleys tonight.
High pressure builds on Sunday into early next week bringing warm
temperatures to the interior.

&&

.DISCUSSION...An upper level trough has moved into the Pacific
Northwest, bringing us widespread cloud cover. A few showers are
possible in Trinity county this afternoon and evening, but otherwise
conditions are expected to be dry. Northerly winds have picked up
behind the trough, mainly for the coastal waters and areas near the
coast. Peak gusts of up to 25 to 35 mph are possible both this
afternoon and Saturday afternoon, with the highest found on coastal
headlands and on exposed ridges of Del Norte, Humboldt, and western
Mendocino. Tonight, clearing skies along with a cold airmass
overhead will bring chillier temperatures to the interior. Moisture
is still available and dew points are high, so some valleys could
see fog, which would prevent temperatures from cooling as much. Some
of the colder valleys that do clear out could see temperatures dip
into the low to mid 30s. A frost advisory has been issued for the
valleys of NE Mendocino (including Willits, Laytonville, Potter
Valley, Covelo) and areas of Lake County.

High pressure builds this weekend, bringing warmer weather to the
area. High 70s and low 80s are possible in the interior by Sunday
and the coastal areas could see low to mid 60s, depending on the
marine layer. The warm and dry pattern continues into early next
week. An upper low passes by the area midweek, which is likely only
to bring cloud cover. NBM chances for any precipitation are less
than 10% everywhere. This could moderate temperatures inland
slightly with additional cloud cover, but still 70s and 80s are
forecast in the interior for much of the week. JB

&&

.AVIATION...Low level stratus with MVFR ceilings persisted at the
coastal terminals this afternoon admist increasing northerly flow,
especially in northern Humboldt County and Humboldt Bay. Winds
will continue to increase as the coastal pressure gradient
tightens between a cold upper low and a thermal trough over the
desert SW. Gusts 20 to 30 knots are likely through 00Z this
evening, remaining elevated overnight, especially at CEC. Gusts 10
to 15 knots and VFR conditions are expected at UKI; HREF is
hinting at potential for a stratus layer developing the Russian
River Valley overnight as skies clear, although probabilities are
low. Lingering scattered ceilings will clear out through early
Saturday morning as strong northerly winds continue at the coast.

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds are gusting 20 to 30 knots in the nearshore
waters this afternoon as the coastal pressure gradient tightens.
Energy from a decaying NW swell will quickly becoming dominated by
steep northerly wind wave action. Gale gusts are likely in the outer
waters downwind of Cape Mendocino and Port Orford, becoming more
widespread and increasing overnight. Sustained gales and gusts 35 to
45 knots are likely across all marine zones by Saturday afternoon,
only slightly sheltered in the southern inner waters. Steep and
hazardous seas generated from these strong winds will propagate into
the inner waters, producing 13 to 15 foot wave heights through
Sunday morning. Winds will gradually diminish Sunday afternoon as
the coastal jet moves further offshore and weakens. Seas in the
outer waters will likely remain within advisory criteria through
Monday morning even as winds diminish.
